AVESTHAGEN LIMITED’S bioactive manufacturing unit, Dhanvantari Botanicals Pvt. Ltd., located near Bangalore, India is an ISO 9001:2000 certified unit. It is also one of the first few bioactive manufacturing units across the world to achieve ISO 22000-2005 and “Certified Organic” for processing. This facility is spread over 50,000 square feet with a state-of-the-art production and a R&D facility. The herbal extract manufacturing unit is the first of its kind in Karnataka with a certification by the Indian System of Medicine and Homeopathy to manufacture 43 bioactives as Ayurvedic products.

TWO hundred Eastern Cape businesses last week received certificates allowing them to compete in international markets and for big contracts.

This comes after the small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) went through a rigorous training programme through Qualitec that cost about R3million.

The training focused on quality management systems to ensure that the quality of their products and services is of an international standard.

The funding came from the Eastern Cape Development Corporation , Small Enterprise Development Agency , Tourism Enterprise Partnership , the Eastern Cape Tourism Board and the Department of Economic Development and Environmental Affairs .

“Both the public and private sector make it an imperative that service providers must comply with International Standards Organisation (ISO) standards, particularly because the public sector is the major procurer of SMME services.

“This programme helps improve the competitiveness of small business, and gives them an edge to compete abreast with big business.

“This is a National Qualification Framework (NQF) Level 5 qualification, and because these standards are applicable on all trade agreements, an SMME with the ISO certificate can enter any foreign market with their products and services,” said Qualitec director Phakamile Siyo.

The ISO 9001 standard cuts across all sectors and it ensures product and service quality.

About 140 accommodation establishments are being trained on the international HACCP/ISO 22000 standards, which focus on food health and safety. This is a 2010 readiness programme that seeks to ensure that the accommodation sector complies with international standards of food safety. — DDR

Following the award of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point System (HACCP) and Shangri-La Food Safety Management System (SFSMS) accreditations, Kowloon Shangri La, Hong Kong has moved up to the next level. ISO 22000 certification, a food safety management system, was awarded to the hotel by TQCS International (Australia) in November. The hotel is one of only a few Shangri-La properties to receive ISO 22000 accreditation.

In 2009 Deveci Broyler expects to receive Certificate ISO 22000:2005

Baku, Fineko/abc.az. Deveci Broyler OJSC is ongoing measures on introduction of food safety management standard - ISO 22000:2005.

The Company reports that in 2009 after completion of seven stages of the process of standard application Deveci Broyler will get Certificate ISO 22000.

“In this connection our enterprise was visited by specialists of Russian-German joint venture Rojdenstenski&partners. The purpose of this visit is solution of issues stipulated within the fifth stage of requirements - ISO 22000:2005,” it was reported.

Deveci Broyler plans to produce at least 100 types of goods.

The Company has used food safety management standard since the end of 2007.

Uganda protects its fish exports with training in ISO 22000
Uganda is working with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization to train Fish processors and exporters on the ISO 22000 Food Safety Management System. The goal is to be able to continue to access international fish markets, and ensure the sustainability of fish exports to the European market.

The training targeted internal auditors working in the fisheries industry. The fisheries minister, Fred Mukisa said there is a need for constant monitoring to ensure safety.

Global Food Safety Initative (GFSI) and ISO 22000

Major US retailers, including Walmart, have asked suppliers to be certified by a GFSI Benchmarked scheme by July of 2008. How does this relate to ISO 22000? GFSI has evaluated different certification schemes, and approved 4. (BRC, IFS, SQF and Dutch HACCP) So where does this leave ISO 22000? When GFSI evaluated ISO 22000, concerns were raised about sufficient PRPs. An additional PRP document, to be audited along with ISO 22000, has been developed. ISO 22000 will be benchmarked by GFSI, along with the additional PRP document near the end of 2008.

There are two interesting new additions to Companies in the news for ISO 22000 registration.

The Tanjung Manis Halal Park reported in the BorneoPost that it is poised to set the benchmark for production of halal foods because of its emphasis on quality and safety. Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is quoted saying "The most beautiful thing about this park is that we have the credibility to export because all of our products would be able to satisfy the ISO 22000 Standard and that is very important nowadays".

In India, Akshay Patra Foundation reports achieving 22000 Certification for six kitchens that supply a school meal program for over 9 hundred thousand children every day. Recent registrations to ISO 22000

Companies worldwide wide are contributing to the growth of ISO 22000. We have seen recent registrations from a variety of industries and countries.

Cognis achieved registration. This makes the company one of the first German companies registered to the standard, further proof that their products meet the highest quality standards.

Aik Cheong, a beverage maker from Malaysia has been awarded registration, and now exports to more than 20 countries, taking advantage of growing markets in Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

Registrations continue to grow in the Mideast. Registered companies include United Dates Factory in Oman, The Catering Business Unit of Air Muscat International Airoport, and Shangri-la Hotel.

Dubai Industrial City has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kanoo Group to have their operations across the UAE and Oman assessed to the Dubai Quality Mark Standards.

Congratulations to SULFO RWANDA INDUSTRIES S.A. who acheived ISO the certification for their Drinking Water plant from m/s URS, Egypt. Also, their company is the very first to obtain the ISO 22000.2005 Certification in Rwanda and for the Drinking water, they are the very first in the Central and East African region, if not in the entire African continent!!

Recent registrations to ISO 22000 show the variety of companies benefiting from ISO 22000 Registration worldwide. Reza Seylani Tea from Sri Lanka was recently awarded registration. They report their goal to increase exports, and achieve their mission of Capturing the World with Quality Tea.

Holiday Inn Park View in Singapore has been awarded registration by Lloyds Registrar. They are reported to be the first hotel in Singapore to be certified. The general manager is quoted as saying: “With ISO 22000 certification the hotel has in place an internationally recognized system to ensure food safety at all levels from storage to preparation and delivery”

In Beirut, the Quality Program at the Economy and Trade Ministry, QUALEB had a ceremony to recognize 17 different Lebanese firms that received ISO 22000 registration. And in India, Heritage Foods reported that its dairy division in 21 locations has been certified.
